Autism Assessment in Toronto

Autism assessments are available for children, teens, and adults at two Toronto clinics: Euclid Avenue and Eglinton Avenue East. Clients who prefer another GTA location can also attend our Thornhill, North York, or Markham clinics. The assessment service is the same across all five locations.

The assessment considers developmental history and current functioning to determine whether the findings are consistent with autism spectrum disorder. You receive a written psychological report setting out the findings, any diagnosis that is supported, and practical recommendations. In-person appointments are available at both Toronto locations. The clinics are open Monday to Friday and Sunday from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm and are closed Saturday. Evening and Sunday appointments can make scheduling easier around school or work.

We provide autism assessments for children, teens, and adults. The reasons for seeking an assessment often differ by age.

• Children: assessed when differences in social communication, routines, or sensory responses are affecting everyday life at home or school, or when existing concerns remain unexplained.
• Teens: assessed when social or organizational demands increase, or when it is unclear whether autism, ADHD, anxiety, or a combination of factors best explains the concerns.
• Adults: assessed for personal clarity, documentation for work or study, or long-standing questions. The assessment considers both developmental history and current day-to-day demands.

The initial consultation helps determine which type of assessment best matches the questions you want answered.

The exact measures vary with age, history, and the questions being assessed. The process includes a developmental and current-functioning history, standardized and clinical measures of social communication and patterns of behaviour, structured observation where appropriate, and relevant collateral information with consent. The psychologist also considers other factors — such as attention, learning, anxiety, trauma, or language differences — that can overlap with or accompany autism.

The process starts with a consultation so we can understand the reason for the assessment and explain the scope before anything is booked.

1. Consultation: we discuss your concerns and what you hope the assessment will clarify. We also review the proposed scope and fee before you decide whether to proceed.
2. Scheduling and location: choose Euclid Avenue, Eglinton Avenue East, or one of our Thornhill, North York, or Markham clinics. We also confirm which sessions can be completed virtually. Evening and Sunday appointments are available.
3. Intake and history: we review developmental history, current functioning, previous assessments, and relevant collateral information.
4. Testing sessions: the assessment team administers the selected measures in person or virtually, depending on what is appropriate for those tools.
5. Interpretation, feedback, and report: the Registered Psychologist reviews and interprets the findings, discusses them with you during feedback, and provides the written report.

A Toronto assessment can combine virtual and in-person sessions. For example, intake and feedback take place virtually while testing is completed at the Toronto clinic that is more convenient for you, reducing the number of clinic visits required.

Fully virtual assessment is available across Ontario where the referral question and selected measures support remote administration. The timeline is approximately 3 weeks from intake to the written report. That includes testing, review of relevant collateral information, scoring and interpretation, and feedback. Timing depends on age, clinical complexity, and appointment availability. Mention any school, workplace, or other deadline at intake so scheduling can be prioritized.

Autism assessments are private, fee-for-service psychological services and are not covered by OHIP. The fee varies with factors such as age, clinical history, and the scope of testing required. During the consultation, we explain the fee and what it includes before you decide whether to book.

Some extended health and employee benefit plans reimburse part of the cost of psychological services. Coverage depends on the plan, so it is worth confirming the details with your insurer. No physician referral is required to contact the clinic or book an assessment. If you plan to submit the cost to an extended health plan, check whether your insurer requires a referral for reimbursement.
