About this assessment

Giftedness assessments evaluate advanced intellectual and learning abilities using standardized cognitive measures. They help families, schools, and program selection committees understand whether a child's cognitive profile meets the criteria for gifted identification — and how best to support that learner.

A typical assessment includes a comprehensive clinical interview, a standardized IQ measure (WPPSI-IV, WISC-V, or WAIS-IV depending on age), and integration with developmental and academic history. For children, parent and teacher input may also be incorporated where useful.

The written report summarizes the cognitive profile, identifies relative strengths and any areas of concern, and provides specific recommendations for school placement, enrichment, and home support. Reports are accepted by Ontario school boards and private gifted programs.

Common questions

What does a giftedness assessment measure?

A giftedness assessment evaluates intellectual ability using standardized cognitive measures — typically the WISC-V (children) or WAIS-IV (adults). It assesses verbal comprehension, visual-spatial reasoning, fluid reasoning, working memory, and processing speed, producing a Full Scale IQ and index scores that schools and gifted programs use for placement decisions.

Will the report be accepted by Ontario school boards and gifted programs?

Our reports are signed by a Registered Psychologist and meet the documentation standards used by Ontario school boards (including TDSB, YRDSB, PDSB, HDSB, DDSB) and private gifted programs. Each board applies its own placement policies; you should confirm specific requirements with your child's school or program before submission.

What age can you assess for giftedness?

We commonly assess children from approximately age 6 through to adulthood. The specific measure used varies by age. For pre-school assessment, the WPPSI-IV may be appropriate; school-age children typically receive the WISC-V; adults receive the WAIS-IV. The appropriate measure is confirmed at intake.

Is a referral required to book?

No. A private giftedness assessment in Ontario does not require a physician or school referral. You can book directly. Some insurance plans may require referral for reimbursement — confirm with your benefits provider before booking.

How long does the assessment take?

Most giftedness assessments complete within 2–4 weeks from intake to final report. Testing usually occurs in a single session (or two shorter sessions for younger children), with the report following 1–2 weeks later.
